PROSPEX ALPINIST
THE “LAUREL ALPINIST”
In 1959, Seiko’s first Alpinist watch was introduced to meet the needs of mountain climbers and recreational field sports enthusiasts. Remarkably, it was the first Seiko watch ever produced specifically for sports usage, and in doing so blazed a trail that led to the development of many landmark timepieces and timing devices for sports, from stopwatches to diver’s watches, in the decades that followed. While its core character has remained unchanged, its design has evolved over time.
THE 1959 MODERN RE-INTERPRETATIONS
Inspired by the Alpinist, Seiko’s first sports watch, these tailored, yet rugged re-interpretations are styled to fit contemporary tastes, smoothly refined for all-day wear and even more powerful than the original. The newest introductions offer enhanced GMT functionality, with a GMT hand that can be independently set to track a second time zone at a glance. While retaining such features as mountain-shaped markers and distinctive hands, the new re-interpretations provide a contemporary take on the original iconic design. Inspired by daring mountaineers, the Alpinist collection celebrates the beginnings of Seiko’s rise to the forefront of high-intensity timekeeping.
UPDATED FOR TODAY
Though the newest models still recall the original 1959 design, they have been updated to reflect more contemporary lines and house current mechanical technology. The cases are polished to create a modern look, especially when combined with the gently rounded contour of the dial and case. Visible through the screwdown see-through caseback, the upgraded 6R 24-jewel automatic movements provide power reserves of up to 72 hours. Crafted of stainless steel with a scratch resistant curved anti-reflective sapphire crystal, each model also offers enhanced water resistance to 200 meters.
